Literacy

The YWCA Hamilton offers a variety of programs for children and adults to improve their reading skills and advance their education.

One-to-One Tutoring for Adults

One-to-One tutoring for adults is free and confidential. Volunteer tutors are trained in reading methods for adult non-readers and matched with individuals who want to learn to read, improve their reading skills, or learn to speak English.

One-to-One Tutoring for Children

One-to-One tutoring for children is free. Volunteer tutors are trained in specific methods for children and matched with children who read well below their grade level.

Tutor Training

Tutor training is provided twice a year for those volunteers who wish to help an individual learn to read. Tutoring is quite often a rewarding experience. Students become readers, and volunteers are rewarded with the knowledge that they helped in that process.

Reading Classes for Adults

The Literacy Program offers reading classes for adults with learning difficulties or dyslexia at the Butler County Job Center, YWCA New Miami Outreach Site, and the YWCA. Screening for disabilities or dyslexia is also provided.

Elementary and Pre-School Reading Programs

The Literacy Program also provides reading programs for area elementary schools, pre-schools, agencies, and daycare centers. These reading programs help young, struggling readers. They provide parents with skills and materials to help their children succeed in school, and they teach young parents to become more aware of the things they can do to help their young children.

Computer Training

The Literacy Program offers computer classes for individuals who are novices in this age of technology. Classes covering basic computer skills as well as Microsoft programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Access are offered. Additional classes on email and using the Internet, resume preparation, and online job searching are also available in the YWCA Learning Center. To register for upcoming classes, call the YWCA or click here.
